Dear Friend,
We've given gratitudes for all the wonderful successes of last year and are already gearing up for the 2007-2008 KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy experience! NEW STAFFTo help us continue to reach and surpass our goals, we've hired five new teachers. We welcome Ms. Broderick, who will teach writing; Ms. Long, who will teach 5/6th grade science; Mr. Currie, who will teach 7th grade social studies; Ms. Szewczyk, who will teach 5th grade math; and Ms. Houseman, who will teach 7th grade math. To learn more about their experience and amazing accomplishments, please see their bios on our website, here. PROMOTIONS Additionally, we are happy to report two key promotions in our existing staff. First, Ms. Keyte (formerly our 5th grade math teacher) is now our Academic Dean. She will be responsible for coaching teachers and assisting with lesson plans. Her experience and skills will help ensure that great teaching and learning are continuing to improve here at the school.
Next, Ms. Dorado, our office manager, has been promoted to Director of School Operations & Outreach. Ms. Dorado lends her considerable talents to the task of keeping things running on a day-to-day basis. She also facilitates relationships with parents, new students and community. Congratulations to both staff members!
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT KIPP Throughout the rest of this newsletter, you will see details of what our kids are doing this summer, how much growth they made on the norm-referenced SAT-10 test, and what some of our plans are for the coming year. We're excited to share our news with you!
SUMMER SCHOOL We look forward to seeing you on August 7th (new students; August 13th for returning students) for summer school. |

Welcoming 5th Graders - Now Enrolling!
Each year, KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy welcomes its newest Freshman (5th grade) class.
Pictured here (left) are two new students from last year signing our Commitment to Excellence agreement, which means that they know what it means and what it takes to be a KIPPster on the way to college.
Do you know of a young scholar ready to make that commitment?
We are still accepting enrollments for 5th graders!
To learn more or sign a student up for an excellent education, please contact Leticia Dorado at 415-440-4306 x300 or email her by clicking here.

Students Make Great Gains on SAT-10
Our young scholars made incredible gains on the SAT-10, a national norm-referenced test. On this test, the Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) score is
a way of measuring how a student performs compared to the rest of the country.
For example, if all students were to make exactly one year of progress after
one year of instruction, their NCE scores would remain exactly the same (an NCE
growth of zero). Our KIPPsters, however, make statistically significant gains.
Highlights of our 5th grade class include:
- Our 5th graders made gains of...
- 12.5 NCEs in reading
- 24.1 NCEs in math
- 21.2 NCEs in language
- 24.2 NCEs in science
Fantastic work, KIPPSters!

C.E.L.A. - Our Girls' Group
C.E.L.A. stands for "Community, Empowerment, Leadership & Awareness."
Our girls' group, funded through a grant from the American Association of University Women's Education Fund, started this past year and culminated in May with a Saturday indoor rock climbing experience at Mission Cliffs. For the event, the girls overcame fears, laughed, learned and worked in pairs to safely ascend a wall over 30 ft. high!

OUR MISSION: KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy is dedicated to providing our students
with the knowledge, skills and character traits they will need to
succeed in top-quality college preparatory high schools, colleges, and
the competitive world beyond. We take our mission very seriously, and
our students are among the hardest working around, with national and
state test results that prove their commitment and dedication.
MAKING THIS YEAR GREAT In
2005-2006, our KIPPsters grew 140 points on the Academic Performance
Index, making us the fourth-ranked middle school in San Francisco. Of
all top-ranked schools, we have by far the largest African-American and
Latino populations. This coming year we plan to be the
number-one ranked middle school in the city.
To make it so, we've increased the amount of time our young scholars spend in reading and writing activities in 5th and 6th grade. We've also developed an expository writing class for our 7th and 8th graders. Additionally, we're implementing a character education program...it's all part of helping our students succeed in high school, college and life!
If you'd like to be a part of the 2007-2008 team and family by helping tutor, becoming a volunteer, or making a donation, we'd love to speak with you! Feel free to contact us any time. And do drop by for a visit! We'd love to see you during our regular school year beginning September 4th.

Given to only 2% of all California schools, this is an honor they were proud to accept on behalf of our entire team and family. Go KIPPSTERS!
