Our Faculty

Faculty at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy is chosen based on rigorous criteria. They are all graduates of a four-year accredited college and must be credentialed in California. With at least two years of teaching experience in an urban area, our faculty uses a balanced approach to teaching. Having demonstrated leadership and teamwork, these skilled professionals possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and are highly adaptable. They are uniquely qualified to plan and execute motivating, content-rich lessons based on the California State Standards. Most of all, our faculty is passionate about the mission of preparing traditionally under-served children for excellent high schools, colleges and the world beyond.

Marites Alves – Assistant Principal
Marites Alves is in her fifth year with KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy and her first year as Assistant Principal. She was a Teach For America 2000 corps member where she taught kindergarteners in Compton and East Oakland. In addition to her classroom teaching experience, Marites has served as a Master Teacher and more recently Co-Director of Aim High’s summer program. She has also been a Corps Member Advisor and Learning Team Leader for Teach For America. Marites received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of San Francisco and her Master's of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds a California state teaching credential.

 

Paul Bixenstine – 6th Grade Math

Paul is the new sixth grade math teacher.  He comes to KIPP as a member of Teach for America.  He graduated from Brown University with Honors with a degree in Economics.  Mr. Bixenstine is from Shaker Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, and is a fan of the Indians, Cavaliers, and Browns.  He enjoys running, biking, and playing tennis.  He expects great things out of his sophomores this year and looks forward to working with them and their families.

 

Trinity Broderick - 6th Grade Writing, Grade Level Chairperson

Before joining the team at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy in July 2007, Trinity Broderick taught for five years in San Jose where she began her career as a Teach For America corp member. There, she coordinated the gifted and talented education program and was actively involved in building community partnerships. Trinity holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Connecticut College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. She completed the coursework for her first California teaching credential through San Jose State University and is currently working towards a second in single-subject English instruction.

 

Jamie Coleman – 8th Grade Algebra

For the past year and a half, Jamie has taught our sixth grade math class, but beginning in the fall of 2008 she will be changing roles within our school and will serve as our eighth-grade mathematics teacher. Prior to joining our KIPP team, Jamie taught Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry at Benjamin E. Mays High School (Atlanta, GA) for two years via the Teach for America program.  She is excited to once again be working with older students and a more advanced curriculum.  Jamie earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan.

 

Sundown Collins- 5th Grade Reading

Before joining the staff at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy, Sundown taught 3rd grade in Tampa, Florida, where her students experienced significant gains in reading.  She also taught 2nd - 5th grade in several multiage programs in Seattle, WA.  She is a youth dance instructor and choreographer, and has led dance companies at her former schools.  Sundown earned her B.A. in Elementary Education/Special Education from Central Washington University.  She holds teaching credentials in Florida and Washington and she is currently working on her California teaching credential.

 

Dan Currie - 7th Grade Social Studies, Grade Level Co-Chairperson
This is Dan Currie’s second year at KIPP SF Bay Academy.  Prior to teaching here, he taught seventh and eighth grade social studies and was the student council advisor at KIPP Summit Academy (San Lorenzo, California).  A native New Yorker, Dan started his teaching career as a Teach for America Corps member in the Bronx where he taught U.S. history at the Urban Science Academy.  Before he began teaching, he was a researcher for the New York-based Vera Institute of Justice where he worked on projects involving school safety and adolescent violence.  Dan has a Master's degree in teaching from Pace University.  He is permanently certified in New York state and is working toward a California state teaching credential.

Peter Hannibal – Athletic Director / Physical Education Teacher

Peter Hannibal is in his fourth year with KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy and in a new role as Athletic Director.  Prior to KIPP, Peter taught 7th grade civics for four years in the Virginia public school system and spent his summers teaching 1st grade summer school.  He designed and taught a class through Putney Student Travel at Amherst College, and has spent a year working for the American Youth Policy Forum in Washington, DC, where he advocated public education reform at both a state and national level.  Peter holds a Bachelor's degree in American History with a focus on Social Movements from Dickinson College.  Peter coaches volleyball, soccer, basketball, and cross country.


Jennifer Keyte – Assistant Principal
Jennifer Keyte is in her fifth year with KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy.  Before becoming Assistant Principal, Jennifer taught mathematics and served as the Dean of Academics for KIPP.  In addition to classroom teaching experience in Newark, New Jersey, Jennifer taught for a year in Honduras.  Prior to joining KIPP, Jennifer was the Director of Instruction for a SCORE learning center.  Ms. Keyte holds a Master's in education administration and a New Jersey teaching credential. In addition, she holds a California teaching credential.

 

Loretta McBride - Director of Music & Orchestra

Loretta McBride has been teaching in inner city schools for 36 years. She holds a B.A. in Sociology, and a California teaching credential from Mills College in Oakland.  She received her Master’s degree in Curriculum Design from Patten University.  She received the Master’s Degree Scholar of Distinction Award upon the conferring of her Master’s Degree, is a Phi Beta Kappa scholar and has received awards from the city of San Francisco for inner city music programs in at-risk neighborhoods.  She has worked with the California State University Suzuki Music Program, and developed the KIPP Summit Orchestra for our sister school in San Lorenzo.

 

Megan Montgomery - 5th & 6th Grade Social Studies, Grade Level Chairperson
Before joining KIPP’s faculty in 2005, Megan taught fifth grade in the Bronx, New York.  There, her students advanced between 1.5 and 3 grade levels in reading in a single year.  She holds a Master’s in teaching and has worked as a community organizer promoting social and economic justice issues.  Megan has her Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Tennessee and her Master's of Education at Pace University.


Mike Rettberg - 7th & 8th Grade Science, 7th Grade Co-Chairperson
Mike Rettberg is in his third year of teaching at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy.  Mike earned his B.A. in Politics-Environmental Studies at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and worked as a fisheries biologist before becoming a teacher.  Mike taught 7th grade science for two years in the South Bronx, New York as a Teach for America corps member.  While in NYC, Mike also earned a Master’s degree in Teaching from Pace University. Mike’s diverse teaching experience includes teaching wilderness medicine in Dalat, Vietnam and training new Teach for America corps members.


Elmer Rivera - 8th Grade Social Studies, Social Studies Department Chairperson
Elmer Rivera is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area.  He joined KIPP in 2005 after three years of enduring the frigid winters and squelching hot summers of New York City.  As a high school social studies teacher in Manhattan, Elmer taught Global History, Participation in Government, Introduction to Law, and assisted the policy debate team.  He holds a B.A. in History and La Raza Studies from San Francisco State University and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Michigan.

 

Brien Roberts - 5th & 6th Grade Science                                                                           

Brien Roberts is currently in his eighth year of teaching and his second year at SF Bay Academy. He spent six years teaching 5th grade in Virginia, and consistently had the highest standardized test scores in the county.  A graduate of Mary Washington College, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Brien received a B.S. in Psychology and his Virginia Teaching Credential.

 

Kristen Szewczyk - 5th Grade Math
Kristen Szewczyk is in her second year with KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy.  Prior to moving to the Bay Area, Kristen taught fifth grade math and guided reading at the University of Chicago’s North Kenwood/Oakland Charter School.  Kristen began her career in education through Teach for America.  As a 2003 New York City corps member, Kristen taught first grade and third grade in the Bronx. Kristen earned her B.S. in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University and her M.S. in Teaching Childhood Education from Fordham University. 

 

Sarah Tin – 8th Grade English

Sarah Tin is a native of San Francisco Bay Area.  Before coming to KIPP, she taught for four years in an inner city Oakland middle school and helped dramatically raise the test scores of low income, minority students.  This will be her first year teaching at KIPP SF Bay Academy.  She completed her undergraduate work in English and Education at UCLA and is currently pursuing her educational administration degree at Patten University.

 

Ashley Varady - 6th Grade Reading

Before joining the staff at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy, Ashley taught at the Bronx Latin School in the South Bronx, New York.  As a Teach for America corps member she taught both 6th and 8th grade English.  Ashley earned her B.A. in English/Italian from Middlebury College, in Middlebury, Vermont and her Master's degree in teaching from Pace University in New York City.  She has a teaching credential in New York and is currently working on her California teaching credential.

Danny Walker - 5th Grade Writing
A native of San Francisco, Danny Walker is in his third year at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy.  Prior to joining the staff he worked for several private and parochial schools around the Bay Area teaching grades 5 through 8.  He also has worked with the Aim High summer program for six years as both a humanities and language arts teacher.  Mr. Walker earned his Bachelor’s degree in English from Kenyon College and is currently working on his California teaching credential.



Our Staff

Tim Hughes - Principal

In June of 2008, Tim Hughes finished his New Leaders for New Schools principal residency year at Leadership Public Schools in Hayward, CA. Prior to joining New Leaders, he worked at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas, NV where he taught 6-8 grade science and served as a mentor teacher through the Milken Foundation Teacher Advancement Program. Tim was also a founding program director for Teach For America's Las Vegas program where he trained and supported new teachers. He began his career in education as a TFA corps member in Baltimore City. He received his B.S in Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno and completed his masters work in education at the Johns Hopkins University.

Lydia Glassie - Founder
Ms. Glassie taught and oversaw the reading curriculum at a number of elementary schools in the Baltimore City School District. She then began working with Johns Hopkins University training and advising school staff on the implementation of the Success for All reading program. She moved to San Francisco to work for a small educational company and as the Director of the largest department in the company, she hired and managed 40 people who consulted with schools in six western states. Before joining KIPP, she developed curriculum for a year with the same educational company.

Kara Mannix - High School Preparation & Placement
Kara Mannix is in her second year at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy, but is not new to KIPP, having spent the previous years at KIPP Summit Academy (Dean of Students in San Lorenzo for 1.5 yrs) and KIPP Bridge College Prep (5th Grade Math/Founding Teacher/Grade Level and Department Chair for two years).  She is our full-time Director of High School Preparation and Placement, helping to place our eighth grade students in quality high schools. She has already facilitated getting our students into A Better Chance and is helping them as they get ready to transition to high school.  Kara holds a B.A. in Psychology and Child Development from UC Davis and an M.A. in Psychology in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.  She taught high school Spanish with Teach for America in South Louisiana for two years and was a 3rd Grade teacher at East Palo Alto Charter School for two years.


Leticia Dorado - Director of School Operations & Community Outreach
Leticia Dorado has previous experience as the founder of a dual-immersion bilingual elementary charter school in East Oakland.  During the summer, she has worked as a director for Aim High Summer program. Leticia obtained her business administration degree from San Francisco State University.  She is fluent in Spanish.

Michelle Finnerty - Business Manager                                                                            
Michelle Finnerty has worked part-time for KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy since September 2007.  Her background is in the field of education, with six years of experience teaching preschool and nine years working as a Speech-Language Pathologist with elementary and middle school students.  Michelle received a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development and Psychology and a Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders.  While in graduate school at San Francisco State University, Michelle managed the office for a progressive technology company for two years.
